Jim Weatherly, the Hall of Fame songwriter, has died at the age of 77.
His best-known song was ‘Midnight Train To Georgia’, but it was a different song that he wrote for Gladys Knight and the Pips which forged an important country relationship with Ray Price.
Price, a Country Music Hall of Fame artist, released ‘You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me’ back in 1973; it would become his last number one hit. Gladys Knight released her version one year later and took it to the top five on the pop charts, creating the version that arguably will be best-remembered.
Speaking on Twitter, Knight said: “I’m missing Jim Weatherly already… We were just made for each other. We grew our lives together.”
Weatherly, who also wrote for Kenny Chesney and Kenny Rogers, died at his home in Brentwood, Tennessee, on Thursday. The cause of death was not immediately released.
