Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs have received the National Medal of Arts from outgoing President Donald Trump.
The ceremony is believed to have taken place shortly after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach the President for an historic second time.
American news outlets reported that the National Medal of Arts ceremony took place in the East Room of the White House and involved both country singers, although representatives for the stars have reportedly refused to comment.
The awards have not been a top priority for President Trump during his time in office; in 2019 he issued just four of them – the first four of his presidency – one of them going to Alison Krauss. Historically, ten or more a year have been awarded by previous presidents going back as far as President Reagan.
At the time of writing, neither Keith nor Skaggs have shared or commented about the awards on social media but it comes as many notable people are declining honours from Trump in the wake of the recent riots at the U.S. Capitol. Toby Keith played at Trump’s inauguration back in 2017, but had previously identified as a Democrat.
