host of The Michael Commins Show
Michael Commins is a journalist and radio presenter in Mayo in the West of Ireland and has just reached the 4th anniversary presenting shows on Spotlight TV.
My career in media began (a good many years ago!) when I left a job with the Bank of Ireland in Abbeyleix, Co Laois, to commence work with an entertainment magazine owned by the late Tony Loughnane in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, where I spent close to one year. Since then, I have been involved with the regional newspaper scene in my native county of Mayo where I currently work with The Mayo News.
In 1987, at the request of Paul Claffey, I started a show on Midwest Radio which, at the time, was one of many pirate stations broadcasting around the island of Ireland. The station was legalised in 1989 and I have presented two weekly country shows (Wednesday and Sunday nights) on Midwest Radio ever since. The station is currently the No 1 regional radio station in Ireland.
In 1996, I organised a special Ireland shortwave radio day on St Patrick’s Day when we broadcast shows in six languages around the world via the BBC World Services transmitters. It took a huge effort at the time (25 years ago!) and we got thousands of letters and QSL cards from so many countries who loved the venture. This had never been done before (or since) in the history of broadcasting in Ireland.
Four years ago in January 2017, Paul Claffey, who is CEO of Midwest Radio and also the man behind Ireland West Music TV, asked me to host a show on Phil Mack’s Keep It Country channel (now known as Spotlight). I am glad to say that the show has established a large and tremendously loyal following as we remain ultra loyal to real country music from both sides of the Atlantic as well as including some surprise choices every now and again which always go down a treat with our viewers.
I also include a number of requests or “shout-outs” on the shows that are very popular and also help to establish a great rapport with the audience. A lot of work and research goes into the show each week as I try and remain faithful to the winning format which continues to resonate so well with viewers of my show. Grateful thanks to everyone who watches the show on Ireland and the UK and online in America, Canada and elsewhere. Thank you for the privilege of welcoming me into your homes each week. Do keep it country!
